Here’s the honest answer: Molokini is good year-round. The water stays warm, the crater is sheltered, and good mornings happen in every season. What changes through the year is the weather, the water temperature, the crowds and whether humpback whales are around. Here’s what to expect.

December to February: whale season

The coolest, wettest part of the year, with water around 74 to 76°F. Many days are still sunny and calm, and this is the heart of humpback whale season, so the boat ride often turns into a whale watch. Bring a light jacket for the ride and consider a wetsuit top for the water.

March to May: calm and comfortable

Spring brings drier weather and warming days, with water still around 74 to 76°F. Whales are around into early April. It’s a great all-round time, with fewer crowds than summer outside of spring break.

June to August: warm water, busy boats

Hot, dry and sunny, with water around 77 to 79°F. Summer is peak family travel season, so book a few days to two weeks ahead. Occasional south swells can make Molokini unsafe for a day or two, when boats switch to backup sites. Sun protection matters most now: wear a rash guard and mineral sunscreen.

September to November: the warmest water

The ocean is at its warmest, around 79 to 80°F, and crowds thin out once school is back in session. October and November mark the transition toward the winter rainy season, and the first humpbacks can start arriving in late fall.

The best time of day

Morning matters more than month. The trade winds usually build through the day, so early departures get the calmest, clearest water and the least crowded crater. Some afternoon trips aim for Molokini but often end up at a calmer spot like Coral Gardens. If Molokini is a must, book a morning trip; some, like Redline Rafting, guarantee it.

Don’t let the forecast stop you

Maui’s weather is very local, and a rainy morning in one town can be sunny on the water. Captains won’t go to Molokini if conditions aren’t safe, and if a trip is canceled for weather, operators typically offer a refund or a new date. Check your operator’s policy when you book.
